Updates on my mom

I am going to start this post then keep adding to it as I find out more information throughout the day/week. Here is what has happened so far:

5:30am they arrived at the hospital for check in and preparation began

7:30am she went into surgery and the doctors said they hoped the procedure would last somewhere around an hour.

8:54am I got a call from my dad that she was out of surgery and everything has went great. I am trying to remember all the details from memory at this point so I will double check with my dad later and make sure everything is accurate on here.
-They were able to place the patch on her tumor, good news.
-The tumor was much closer to the middle of her eye then they expected therefore the risk of loss of vision in that eye is higher. We knew going in that there would be the possibility some vision loss, it was just matter of time. Now the doctors are saying that it is more than likely she will have some vision loss but again we just don't know when.
-According to the doctors the surgery was the easiest part now we have to play a wait game for 5 years to find out if this is going to travel to her liver. The doctor said the biggest concern right now is that little particles of the tumor will get into her blood and travel to her liver. She will be checked every three months for the next three years then every six months for the next two years to check her liver.
-Over the next five years they will also watch the size of her tumor. If the tumor gets to be bigger than 10??? (I believe my dad said centimeters but I could be totally wrong on that) then they will remove her eye completely.

She is in recovery right now and they are not sure how long she will have to be there. None of the family is allowed to see her as long as she is in recovery because of privacy laws. My dad is going to call with an update when she moves to her own room.

10:35am My mom just called and she is doing great. She has not taken any pain medication yet and isn't in that much pain. She said she has a little headache but nothing too bad. She was able to move to her own room about 10am, she said she had a little trouble waking up from the anesthesia but I thought that was pretty quick. She will have to wear a patch over her eye for the whole week. A big rule the doctor told her was no crying which every time I talk to her tend to happen so I'm going to have to try to control that...no help from the little one growing in my belly! We have a date to skype a little later today so I will let everyone know what I think after that.

I was able to talk to my mom on the phone several more time on Monday but we were never able to Skype. On Tuesday we found out from the hospital that for privacy reason they have Skype blocked from their internet so it doesn't look like I will be able to see my mom until Friday when she gets home. She did send me a picture from her cell phone to mine but it was nothing surprising. She looked just like herself with a patch over her right eye. Wednesday I was finally able to have a longer conversation with her on my drive to work. No one was there with her yet so we were able to have time with just the two of us. I miss my mom like crazy but I always feel better after we can talk for a while.

Friday:
My mom had her second surgery today to remove the patch/plaque that was put on the tumor on her eye. She was taken into surgery around 7:45am and was done a little after 8:30am. My dad called and said everything had gone just as planned. He was able to talk to the doctor which said she is not to lift anything over five pounds for the next two weeks, she has to wear a patch until he releases her and no driving until the patch comes off that she has to wear over her right eye. My mom called me around 10:30am to say she was doing great and getting ready to be discharged. She also told me that they only had to use local anesthesia for this surgery so her recovery time was much shorter! She was completely awake though this surgery which kind of wigs me out but she said it was neat to hear the doctors and know what was going on the whole time. She then called me back around 12:45pm and she was a couple of blocks away from the hospital and super excited to be on her way home!

Thank you again for all of your love, support, kinds words and of course prayers! She is most defiantly not out of the woods with cancer but as far as this surgery goes we can close this chapter of the long road to recovery. We pray that she will be cleared by her doctor soon and we can begin her three month check ups.
